From Simple to Sophisticated: Elevating Student Lexis Through Structured Scaffolding

In the SPM 1119 Writing Paper, potential Grade A candidates (A+, A, A-) need more than basic vocabulary to achieve higher band scores. They need to use less common lexis, which refers to more advanced, precise and interesting words commonly found at CEFR B2 and C1 levels. However, simply giving pupils a list of bombastic words to memorise is not enough. Some pupils may use these words incorrectly or struggle to apply them in their writing. Therefore, teachers need to guide pupils in learning and using less common lexis meaningfully and confidently.

Scaffolding is an effective way to help pupils develop their vocabulary skills step by step. Teachers can introduce new words by explaining their meanings, word classes, common word combinations and suitable contexts. Pupils can then practise using these words in sentences and paragraphs before applying them in their essays. Instead of inserting advanced words just to impress the examiner, pupils learn to choose words that suit their ideas and purposes. With proper guidance and regular practice, pupils can improve their vocabulary, write more effectively and increase their chances of achieving higher band scores in the SPM 1119 Writing Paper.

For stronger SPM candidates, it is feasible to raise the lexical level while keeping the words usable in articles. The key is to choose words that sound sophisticated but can still be used naturally and accurately. The following are numerous examples of less common lexis which potential grade A candidates should try to apply in their writing.
