MELICA PART 6: BONUS MODEL GUIDED ESSAYS FOR GALUS/HALUS SPM 1119/2 CANDIDATES

Some Guided Writing questions in Part 2 of SPM 1119/2 may seem difficult and challenging for galus/halus candidates. At times, some teachers are a bit sceptical with weak candidates’ ability to accomplish the writing tasks successfully. To me, there is a truth in it, however, through ample exposure to SPM standard questions, galus/halus candidates have a potential to perform in their writing.

MELICA PART 6 continues to offer model essays to lower intermediate candidates. Just like the previous essays, the three essays in this part use simple ideas, vocabulary and sentence structures. The following are practical activities that could be carried out with the weak SPM candidates based on the model essays. Even though certain activities have been suggested before, there is no harm as similar activities done by the galus/halus candidates will definitely reinforce what they have learnt previously. Their understanding, skills and confidence to write can be further fortified. Teachers may want to carry out these activities:

i) Examine the ideas and details presented in each paragraph. Teacher may ask the candidates to highlight which part fulfils the first, second and third tasks. This focused discussion will guide the candidates how each task should be fulfilled.

ii) Revise with the students three different techniques of writing their introduction; repetition (Model Essay 1), questioning (Model Essay 2) and flashback/personal experience (Model Essay 3). Let them apply the techniques in small groups. They write their own introductory paragraphs.

iii) Underline linking words, connectors or cohesive devices. They are also encouraged to suggest other additional connectors or cohesive devices in the model essay.

iv) In groups, the candidates can examine the ideas in the model essay. They discuss and suggest other possible ideas and details that can be included to fulfil each task.
