MELICA PART 12: EXTRA SCAFFOLDING FOR LOWER INTERMEDIATE WRITERS

No doubt, galus (gagal lulus) / halus (harapan lulus) or weak candidates of SPM 1119/2 always have issues with essay writing. One of them is vocabulary. I am fully aware that they may not know the meaning of words like crime, neighbourhood, common, reduce and illegal (Essay 1). Similarly, there will also be some words which are alien to them in the second and third essays shared in this write up.

As teachers, we always know which words our galus / halus candidates know and may not know. Why don’t we take initiatives to enrich their vocabulary from time to time? Perhaps, we can focus on words that we believe they may not know such as the words in red in the second essay below. Gradually, our galus / halus candidates will understand ‘moreover’, ‘on the other hand’ and ‘furthermore’ and know how to use them despite having low proficiency of English.

The point is teacher, through our proper guidance, their vocabulary can improve. Besides, I am also positive lower intermediate candidates will be able to use dialogues like in the third essay below if they are coached well. Therefore, let’s keep doing what we can to ensure our galus / halus candidates do not submit blank papers for their essays. Let’s continue developing their confidence and interest to write through MELICA! (Model Essays for Lower Intermediate Candidates).
